Many people that are attracted to Catholicism are also skeptical. Misinformation, poor examples and media inaccuracy don’t help.\u00a0The challenge of evangelization is removing these obstacles to faith and trust in the Church.<\/p>\n

However, moving someone from “interested but skeptical”<\/a> to “open and trusting” is not easy.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a saying in business, \u201cPeople don\u2019t buy from companies, people buy from people.\u201d The same dynamic plays out in the Church with respect to evangelization. Relationships, the people factor, are the key to success.<\/p>\n

Here are five reasons why building relationship works for evangelization.<\/p>\n

1. Relationships Establish Trust<\/h2>\n

By building relationships you build trust. If you establish trust, your students be more likely to believe what you say<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Someone in RCIA once told to me, \u201cI never met any Catholics that I considered real followers of Jesus. Now that I have, I can seriously consider joining the Church.\u201d<\/p>\n

Connecting on a personal level makes a person receptive. It lets them know you care.<\/p>\n

2. Relationships Build Connections to the Divine<\/h2>\n

My professor at Franciscan University, Barbara Morgan, used to say, \u201cCatechists don\u2019t give information, they give themselves with the truth adhering.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evangelization requires more than just lecturing about doctrine. It requires sharing yourself <\/a>in a way that communicates the Faith to others. Relationship is the medium for the message.<\/p>\n

The human connections you make are like a bridge, or a conduit, on which the divine connection can travel. Grace builds on nature. Connecting on a human level must come before a divine connection is possible.<\/p>\n

3. Relationships Help You Understand Others<\/h2>\n

By getting to know someone, you get insights into their life-situation, motivation, hardships and desires. The interaction that comes from relationship helps you understand how to help that person and address their concerns.<\/p>\n

Everyone has obstacles when they think about joining the Church. How can you address the obstacles if you don\u2019t know what they are?<\/p>\n

4. Relationship Facilitates Transparency<\/h2>\n

Part of building relationships involves openness about your own life. Sharing how these truths changed you will motivate change in others. If they can see it in your face, they’ll know it’s real.<\/p>\n

5. It’s the Way Jesus and the Apostles Did It<\/h2>\n

Jesus dealt with people. He knew them. He knew their hearts, their troubles, their desires.\u00a0Of course, he was God so he had a much easier time than we do. However, St. Paul did the same thing<\/a>!<\/p>\n

When you establish relationship and minister from that, you\u2019re dealing with people. You\u2019re not dealing with facts, doctrines, rules and laws…although those come into play. You\u2019re dealing with people.<\/p>\n
