We can learn a thing or two from great salesmen for Catholic evangelization.<\/p>\n

Salesman lead with their strongest points first…their value proposition. Are the details of Catholic doctrine and theology really the strongest lead for evangelizing people into the Catholic Church?<\/p>\n

Steve Jobs and Catholic Evangelization<\/h2>\n

Eric Sammons wrote an excellent post recently on What every Catholic can learn from Steve Jobs<\/a>. He talked about how Steve Jobs pitched the iPad. Jobs talked about how easy and fun it was to use. How it would make your life better. Other CEOs talked about the tech specs of their tablets.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich do you think is the more effective sales technique?\u201d remarked Sammons, \u201cThe non-Apple CEOs were selling toothpaste; Steve Jobs was selling white teeth. Instead of focusing on the details of his product, Jobs instead focuses on how his product will change people\u2019s lives\u201d <\/strong>(emphasis added).<\/p>\n

His point? Too often the Catholic approach to evangelization is in the details–the doctrine, the theology, the apologetic arguments. However, in the early Church, evangelization was more about \u201cwhite teeth.\u201d<\/p>\n

I think Sammons is on to something. We should be \u201cselling\u201d the benefits of Catholicism, not the technical specs. The better lead for evangelization is how Catholicism will change\u00a0people’s lives. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Beware! Danger Ahead!<\/h2>\n

I think Catholics are particularly wary of this kind of approach. It appeals to emotion, which is fickle. \u00a0It is too much like preaching a \u201chealth, wealth and prosperity\u201d gospel. Become a Catholic and all your problems will disappear it tells\u00a0people.<\/p>\n

However, shying away from this kind of message prevents us from boldly proclaiming what the Church truly offers<\/strong>. We hide the great benefit because we\u2019re afraid our claims won\u2019t come true for everyone.<\/p>\n

The fact that everyone doesn\u2019t get infused contemplative prayer didn\u2019t stop Teresa of Avila from writing about it. Meanwhile, people aren\u2019t attracted to the Catholic Faith because they don\u2019t understand the richness, beauty being Catholic can bring.<\/p>\n

Selling is not Necessarily Sleazy<\/h2>\n

Evangelization is kind of like sales. Selling is the art of influencing decisions. When it\u2019s done right, it\u2019s about meeting a customer\u2019s needs. You match their desires with a product or service you have to offer.<\/p>\n

And, that\u2019s what we\u2019re dealing with–desires. Sometimes a person doesn\u2019t exactly know what they desire. They are seeking something but they\u2019re not sure what. We are trying to get in touch with those desires and steer them toward the truth.<\/p>\n

The Value Proposition<\/h2>\n

In my experience, people need to hear the benefits of Catholicism to be attracted to it<\/strong>. And, they need to hear how it worked and is working in our own lives. Most people are attracted to something through other people.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re not lying when you tell people the great benefits you receive from being Catholic. You’re not trying to mislead people\u00a0when you describe the peace that comes from faithfully following Church teaching. They may not experience the same thing but then again, they might.<\/p>\n

The details of the Faith are not an effective lead in evangelization. That doesn\u2019t mean they are not important. It means the value proposition is the life-giving fullness and peace that Christ can bring.<\/strong> That\u2019s a strong evangelizing message.<\/p>\n
