Just about every time!<\/p>\n<p>Dealing with these sensitive issues\u00a0is where the rubber meets the road in evangelization&#8211;where everything in this <a title=\"Evangelization Basics [Blog Series]\" href=\"http:\/\/marccardaronella.com\/2011\/01\/06\/evangelization-basics-blog-series\/\" target=\"_blank\">series<\/a> comes together.<\/p>\n<p>I love it when my students just get it. When they realize they\u2019re engaged in sinful behaviors and choose to give them up. But very often it doesn\u2019t go that way, and they need a gentle call to something more.<\/p>\n<p>This is never easy. How do you get your students to act on what you\u2019re teaching and change their lifestyles?<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a strategy I developed to confront problem issues as painlessly as possible.<\/p>\n<h2>The First Step<\/h2>\n<p>Teach in a way that addresses the issue so you don&#8217;t have to.\u00a0This sounds simple but many\u00a0people neglect it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Structure your curriculum to do the work for you.<\/strong> It\u2019s much easier to say challenging things in a generic way to a whole group of people than to single out one person. Design your class or series to lead your students to the correct understanding of the issue.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Begin with your end in view.<\/strong> You need to have a focus. In education it\u2019s called backward mapping. What is your objective? Figure that out and work backward from there.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Choose topics that work toward the goal.<\/strong> If you\u2019re just teaching topics without any clear goal or result you want to see, your students won\u2019t get there. You need to be intentional in what you teach.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t waste time with non-essentials: <\/strong>You can\u2019t teach every aspect of Church doctrine, there isn\u2019t time. Concentrate on the important things that lead to change.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Work to convince the hardest case. <\/strong>I figure, if you get that person, you\u2019ll bring the others along too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>If That Doesn\u2019t Work?<\/h2>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>People have a great capacity for self-denial. Even after you spell it out, some people may not understand they should stop.\u00a0If the first strategy doesn&#8217;t work, you might have to talk to the person about what they\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is why establishing a relationship and building trust is absolutely vital.<\/strong> You\u2019ll never be able to talk \u201ctough love\u201d when a person doesn\u2019t know you or where you&#8217;re coming from.<\/p>\n<p>So, before you can challenge you have to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"The Two Essential Aspects of Evangelization\" href=\"http:\/\/marccardaronella.com\/2011\/01\/18\/the-two-essential-aspects-of-evangelization\/\" target=\"_blank\">Build trusting relationships<\/a> with your students<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"5 Reasons Why Relationship is the Key to Evangelization\" href=\"http:\/\/marccardaronella.com\/2011\/02\/03\/5-reasons-why-relationship-is-the-key-to-evangelization\/\" target=\"_blank\">Get to know them personally<\/a> and understand what makes them tick<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Transparency: The Motivator for Trust in Evangelization\" href=\"http:\/\/marccardaronella.com\/2011\/02\/21\/transparency-the-motivator-for-trust-in-evangelization\/\" target=\"_blank\">Be transparent<\/a> so they know you are sincere and only want the best for them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Previous posts in this <a title=\"Evangelization Basics [Blog Series]\" href=\"http:\/\/marccardaronella.com\/2011\/01\/06\/evangelization-basics-blog-series\/\" target=\"_blank\">series<\/a> discuss how to do this. Read these if you haven\u2019t already.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Challenge Charitably<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Challenging your students to live better can be done in a kind, non-threatening way.<\/strong> Never threaten, force, cajole or coerce. <strong>You don\u2019t need to be judgmental.<\/strong> Tell them it is your duty to make sure they know the Church\u2019s position on the issue and that they not in conformity.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t apologize for Church teaching or set the bar too low. These are the demands for the fullness of union with Christ. If you water down the gospel, eventually it won\u2019t mean anything to anyone. It\u2019s their choice whether or not to take the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t think you\u2019re giving them an undue burden. Know you\u2019re doing them a favor by calling them closer to God.<\/p>\n<h2>How St. Paul\u2019s Dealt with the Thessalonians<\/h2>\n<p>In 1 Thessalonians 2:11, Paul speaks of how he dealt with problem issues, \u201cFor you know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What does a father want for his children? He wants them to competent, mature and responsible adults that can contribute to society. So, he exhorts them to be better when they\u2019re not. He encourages them when they do well so they\u2019ll do better. He charges or challenges them to live up to their full potential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is what St. Paul, as a spiritual father, did for the Thessalonians.<\/strong> And the result? He continues, \u201cAnd we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calling people to live the gospel is never easy, but it can be rewarding. God entrusted these people to your care. If you don\u2019t explain the demands, who will?
