Why do you catechize? What is the purpose of your catechesis?<\/p>\n

You might say it’s to teach people Catholic doctrine or to\u00a0pass on the Catholic Faith to your children.<\/p>\n

It’s true, you are doing those things, but they are not the goal.<\/p>\n

So what is the reason you teach students the Catholic Faith?<\/p>\n

Life After Sunday<\/h2>\n

I found an awesome website called Life After Sunday: Intimate Path Catechesis<\/a>. According to them, “The purpose of catechesis is to learn how to become a great lover.” It continues:
\n<\/p>\n

Who can teach us how to love in the only way that will satisfy the human heart? Only Jesus Christ. Allowing ourselves to be drawn into a deeper intimacy with him is the purpose of all catechesis.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I love this\u00a0because it gives a benefit to catechesis that’s beyond just learning the facts of the Faith<\/strong>. A benefit that people\u00a0could care about.<\/p>\n

Let’s face it, knowing about God is not generally seen as an urgent need. There are so many things competing for\u00a0people’s attention, religion often gets pushed to\u00a0the side. It’s not that it’s not important, it’s just that other things have more priority in most\u00a0people’s lives.<\/p>\n

So how do we get\u00a0people to make knowing about God more of a priority?<\/p>\n

Your Unique Selling Position<\/h2>\n

There’s an old saying in real estate, you don’t sell a house, you sell the lifestyle buying that house will bring<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

So, you emphasize the great\u00a0neighborhood, proximity to schools, nice community, playmates for your kids. Anything that will help\u00a0people visualize themselves living in that home.<\/p>\n

You should not be selling the doctrine your students are learning. You\u00a0should be selling the benefits of deeper intimacy\u00a0with Jesus Christ\u00a0because that’s where everything should lead.<\/strong> But it goes even deeper than that.<\/p>\n

Catholicism and the fully human life<\/h2>\n

We are made to live in union, in\u00a0friendship\u00a0with God.<\/strong> Life just does not work apart from him. Transformation in Christ is the path that leads to this human\u00a0fulfillment. Catechesis is a necessary part of this path.<\/p>\n

Life After Sunday says this:<\/p>\n

The path to an amazing, fully human life is the path of intimate friendship. Every enduring relationship follows this path of authentic intimacy\u2014most especially, the relationship between each human person and the Triune God.<\/p>\n

This most original relationship\u2014for which every human person was created and finds fulfillment\u2014naturally follows these stages to deep, intimate union. This is the witness of the saints. This is the unique glory of the human person fully alive.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Catechetical Takeaway<\/h2>\n

Part of\u00a0the trick in catechesis is getting your students to care about what you are teaching<\/a>. Your have to evangelize as well as catechize!<\/p>\n

Good salesmen emphasize benefits not features.\u00a0What should you emphasize so people will want to “buy” your catechetical message? What are you “selling” for your particular catechetical lesson?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Think\u00a0about what being Catholic means to you. What benefits do you get from it? How does Catholicism enhance your life? What benefits do you think your students will get by\u00a0believing what you’re teaching?<\/p>\n

Paint a picture of how your students lives, and the world in general,\u00a0would be better if everyone\u00a0believed this teaching.<\/p>\n

Then, end your lesson\u00a0with concrete applications\u00a0that emphasize the benefits\u00a0because that will get your students to care.<\/p>\n
