Don’t you love the end of a mystery movie?<\/p>\n

You’ve been looking for the clues, piecing together the puzzle of events and trying to figure out exactly what happened.<\/p>\n

Then finally, at the end, it comes…the revelation of the answer you so anxiously waited for.<\/p>\n

Imagine waiting thousands of years to find out “whodunit”!<\/strong><\/p>\n

That’s the tension surrounding God’s plan of salvation. Israel waited generations for the Messiah! All the prophets said he was coming! When would he come? It was a mystery!<\/p>\n

Then, St. Paul comes on\u00a0the scene and reveals the secret. The mystery is\u00a0Christ!<\/p>\n

He’s like the ultimate mystery detective, except, he didn’t figure it out on his own. He was told by God.<\/p>\n

Here are 10 Bible verses that show St. Paul’s “Poirot-like” revelation of the mystery of\u00a0Christ.
\n<\/p>\n

Revealing mystery<\/h2>\n

In biblical terms, a mystery is not quite like an Agatha Christi novel…but close!<\/p>\n

A mystery, in Greek mysterion<\/em>, is a “secret thing” hidden from human knowledge. <\/strong>Only God knows the mystery and the only way for men to find out is for\u00a0God to tell them.<\/p>\n

In the Old Testament, the mysterion<\/em> concerns God’s secret plan of salvation which is unfolding within human history.<\/strong> The plan is slowly revealed over time through the prophets. This is\u00a0the importance of the Scriptures. They are God’s “reveal” of\u00a0the mystery!<\/p>\n

The prophets also speak of the Messiah, the Savior, the one who’s going to\u00a0enact\u00a0the plan.<\/p>\n

So, for ancient Israel, instead of a “whodunit,” the Scriptures are a “how’s God gonna do it” and a “who’s gonna do it.”<\/p>\n

How’s God gonna do it<\/h2>\n

St. Paul very much picks up this theme of the Old Testament mysterion<\/em>. He’s saying his message reveals God’s secret salvation plan that’s been hidden since the beginning of time.<\/p>\n

1. Ephesians 3:4-5:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“When you read this you can perceive my insight into the mystery of\u00a0Christ<\/strong>, which was not\u00a0made known to the sons of men in other generations<\/strong> as it has now\u00a0been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by\u00a0the Spirit.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

2. Romans 16:25: <\/strong><\/p>\n

“Now to him who is able to strengthen you\u00a0according to my gospel and\u00a0the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to\u00a0the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret for long ages but is now disclosed<\/strong> and through\u00a0the prophetic writings…”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Who’s gonna do it<\/h2>\n

This mystery was hidden but now God chose to reveal it and\u00a0make it known through\u00a0the apostles and prophets, particularly Paul.<\/p>\n

3. 1 Corinthians 2:7:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“But we impart\u00a0a secret and hidden wisdom of\u00a0God, which\u00a0God decreed before\u00a0the ages<\/strong> for our glorification.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And, Paul not only knows the mystery plan, he also knows the mystery man–Jesus\u00a0Christ. “Christ in you” is\u00a0the “hope of glory.”<\/p>\n

4. Colossians 1:27:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“…of which I became a minister according to\u00a0the divine office which was given to me for you,\u00a0to make the word of\u00a0God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now made manifest to his saints<\/strong>. To them\u00a0God chose to\u00a0make known how\u00a0great among the Gentiles are\u00a0the riches of\u00a0the glory of this mystery, which is\u00a0Christ in you, the hope of glory<\/strong>.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

5. Ephesians 1:9:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“For he has\u00a0made known to us in all wisdom and insight\u00a0the mystery of his will, according to his purpose which he set forth in\u00a0Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time<\/strong>, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and\u00a0things on earth.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul makes the mystery man known<\/h2>\n

Now there’s nothing left for Paul to do but to make the riches of this mystery of Christ known.<\/p>\n

6. Colossians 4:3:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“…pray for us also,\u00a0that\u00a0God may open to us a door for the word, to declare\u00a0the mystery of\u00a0Christ<\/strong>, on account of which I am in prison, that I may\u00a0make it clear, as I ought to speak.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

7. 2 Corinthians 4:5: <\/strong><\/p>\n

“For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ <\/strong>as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Catechetical takeaway<\/h2>\n

The Bible is like a great mystery story that leads us to\u00a0Christ. The mystery of Christ.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beginning\u00a0with the Fall, the great question is: How will God fix what Adam and Eve have screwed up? And, who’s going to fix it?<\/p>\n

All along the way, we get the clues. <\/strong>A little piece from a story here. A little more revealed through a prophetic writing there. The final piece of the puzzle comes with the arrival of Christ!<\/p>\n

It’s not just\u00a0about what Christ actually said and did though. He worked in the context of everything that came before. He brings all of God’s past revelation\u00a0together into a unity.\u00a0Everything along the way contributes to understanding salvation.<\/p>\n

In the case of Christianity, the medium really is the message! And, the medium is salvation history. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Like master detectives, the apostles, especially St. Paul, put together the pieces and made all the connections so we can understand how to truly be holy, follow God and be saved.<\/p>\n
