\"\"<\/a>The real trick to catechesis is not presenting the information<\/a> but having it penetrate<\/a> a student’s heart.<\/p>\n

That’s also the most difficult part.<\/p>\n

How do you get your students to not only comprehend the message but internalize it and have grow\u00a0within them?<\/p>\n

I think I found the answer a few weeks ago at Franciscan University during the St. John Bosco Conference.
\n<\/p>\n

Catechetical Friendship<\/h2>\n

In 2001, I was a graduate student at Franciscan. My professor Barbara Morgan traveled to France to meet catechists from Notre Dame de Vie<\/em><\/strong>, a secular institute whose members are dedicated to the contemplative life and\u00a0catechesis.<\/p>\n

The meeting was set up by Cardinal Schonborn (yes, the editor of the Catechism Cardinal Schonborn!). He wanted to set up a “catechetical friendship” between Franciscan, Notre Dame de Vie, and Maryvale Institute in England. He felt these institutions all had a similar approach. “The Holy Spirit has fallen on these three places in a special way for catechesis,” he told Barbara.<\/p>\n

Of course, who needs a great<\/em> reason to take a free trip to\u00a0the south of France in the summer! Any reason\u00a0would work for me! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Barbara came back raving\u00a0about their methods and, maybe more importantly, their successes in catechizing children. She talked about how\u00a0the whole session had a contemplative atmosphere, and after the lesson, the kids remained there for silent prayer!!<\/p>\n

There’s been an official friendship between our two institutions (and Maryvale) ever since.<\/p>\n

The Word of God leads the way<\/h2>\n

This year, some major players from Notre Dame de Vie<\/em> gave a keynote at the Bosco Conference.\u00a0<\/strong>During the week I had some great\u00a0conversations with them and watched several demonstrations of their method.\u00a0I was blown away.<\/p>\n

Imagine a lesson that’s part guided meditation on Scripture and part catechetical formation.<\/p>\n

For the practitioners at Notre Dame de Vie<\/em>, the Word of God leads the way!<\/strong> They start\u00a0with a passage from Scripture and lead the students through it with questions about the details of the story. They draw the students into\u00a0the narrative and draw out the doctrinal meaning that’s inherent in the story.<\/p>\n

The effect is quite profound. They also use these cardboard\u00a0silhouettes (there’s an example at the top of the page) to help tell the story. With the visuals and the questions, you are sort of immersed in the biblical narrative and\u00a0the lesson is very engaging.<\/p>\n

Spiritual preparations for the lesson<\/h2>\n

One of the most fascinating aspects was their preparation for\u00a0the lessons.<\/strong> The catechists engage in a sort of group lectio divina that is meditative, typological, and doctrinal.<\/p>\n

First<\/strong> they explore the meaning of the actual text by listening to what the Holy Spirit is telling them.<\/p>\n

Then<\/strong>, they look at the Old Testament connections to get a salvation history<\/a>, big picture understanding.<\/p>\n

Last<\/strong>, they find what the\u00a0Catechism says\u00a0about this passage. This helps to read the passage within the mind of the Church and get the doctrinal connections. They said you can’t really be sure you know what the passage means until you know what the Church says\u00a0about it. That is extremely cool!<\/p>\n

Catechetical takeaway<\/h2>\n

I’m convinced this method of biblical catechesis is\u00a0an essential element to penetrating your student’s hearts with your teaching.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

There’s power in Scripture.<\/strong> It’s not just a book but it’s living and active. The Holy Spirit works through the Bible. God himself says his Word does not return to him void once it goes out but accomplishes what he intends (Isaiah 55:11).<\/p>\n

This is a\u00a0great way of bringing the mystery of Christ<\/a> into all your teaching and making important Old Testament connections<\/a>. Plus, it uses story<\/a>, which is the\u00a0best way to engage your students.<\/p>\n

Obviously, you can’t\u00a0understand\u00a0everything I’m talking\u00a0about\u00a0because you haven’t seen it. I don’t know\u00a0everything\u00a0about it yet either but I want to learn more. And, I’ll be writing\u00a0about it more as I learn.<\/p>\n

The folks at Notre Dame de Vie are in\u00a0the process of developing materials for their method called Come Follow Me<\/a>. They\u00a0should be available in English\u00a0around January. I’ll definitely follow up when I learn more.<\/p>\n
