Use calculated disengagement to get their heads out of the clouds<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I just found her online early in the summer and then met her at the\u00a0St. John Bosco Conference<\/a>\u00a0in July!<\/p>\n

Being from\u00a0Maryvale Institute<\/a>\u00a0in England, she definitely speaks my catechetical “language”!<\/p>\n

Hannah recently wrote this great post on the\u00a0Ecclesial Method<\/a>.\u00a0This is the lesson planning structure taught in the Franciscan University Catechetics department.<\/p>\n

This post talked\u00a0about the first part of the method, preparation. It’s a technique for transitioning your students from\u00a0the busy-ness of life into the classroom. From the secular to\u00a0the spiritual.
\n<\/p>\n

The importance of preparation<\/h2>\n

The Ecclesial Method is drawn from\u00a0Mgr Francis D. Kelly’s book\u00a0The Mystery We Proclaim<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hannah writes:<\/p>\n

“Mgr. Kelly suggests that our guiding principle should be \u201ccalculated disengagement\u201d. When people arrive at catechesis, they come from a full range of different situations. We need to help create the conditions in which people can open their heart and mind to God\u2019s Word.”<\/p>\n

“This environment is deliberately different from the environments they have come from: busy homes and timetables, constant noise and numerous demands. It implicitly states:\u00a0Catechesis is something different \u2013 it is not just more learning like the rest of your day \u2013 here you are coming to listen to what God wants to tell you.”\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

How to use calculated disengagement<\/h2>\n

All catechists\u00a0should be familiar\u00a0with the Ecclesial Method.<\/p>\n

These principles are essential for developing a methodology that serves the content. It lets\u00a0the content drive the teaching instead of the other way\u00a0around. This is vital for effective catechesis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Calculated disengagement is an essential strategy for preparing your students to learn. This is especially true for Catholic elementary school teachers that shift from one subject to another\u00a0without breaks or changes in class periods.<\/p>\n

Catechesis is not just another subject\u00a0and\u00a0should not be treated that way. Telling your students to put away their math books and open their religion books\u00a0without any kind of preparation or “disengagement” from their other subjects imparts that idea.<\/p>\n

For CCD teachers, calculated disengagement has equal priority.<\/p>\n

The kids come into the religion classroom carrying any number of distractions and worries from the outside world. The preparation disengages them from the outside world through various exercises like silence, prayer, meditation, journaling, Bible reading and “Liturgies of\u00a0the Word.”<\/p>\n

This technique is also very effective for preparing adult classes in RCIA.<\/p>\n

Catechetical takeaway<\/h2>\n

Catechesis is more than education in the Faith<\/a>. So, it\u00a0should be conducted in an atmosphere of prayer.<\/p>\n

Calculated disengagement focuses your students on learning the Faith.\u00a0It transitions them from the secular and orients them to\u00a0the spiritual.<\/p>\n
