Here&#8217;s the first four on his list:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Be real<\/strong>\u2014Be yourself.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meet people where they are<\/strong>, not where you want them to be.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Observe<\/strong>\u00a0life, people (including yourself) and human nature closely. Try to understand what\u00a0<em>they<\/em>\u00a0really feel, what\u00a0<em>they<\/em>\u00a0hope for, what\u00a0<em>they<\/em>\u00a0long for (this really helps with the previous).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Speak from your heart<\/strong>. It reveals your humanity. People are tired of talking, singing, preaching and commenting heads. They yearn to connect with the humanity, of others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In this post, I will show you how to get some of Taylor Swift&#8217;s magic into your evangelization efforts.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>1. Be real<\/h2>\n<p>People can see fake from miles away. So, don&#8217;t try to be someone you&#8217;re not.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor Swift&#8217;s songs are completely transparent. They&#8217;re drawn directly from her life and show exactly who she is. She&#8217;s said,\u00a0&#8220;If you listen to my albums, it\u2019s like reading my diary&#8221;\u00a0(source:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taylor_Swift\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Be yourself.\u00a0Your story might just be\u00a0the thing that resonates\u00a0with someone when nothing does.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Meet\u00a0people where they are<\/h2>\n<p>In country music, the story is\u00a0the key. Good stories take the listener on a journey. They teach about\u00a0life and change viewpoints. Taylor Swift tells good stories.<\/p>\n<p>Her autobiographical songs often highlight her own struggles and their resolutions. For instance, <em>Mean<\/em> gets back at the kids who teased her and said she couldn&#8217;t sing. She has\u00a0the last laugh\u00a0because:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Someday I&#8217;ll be living in a big old city<br \/>\nAnd all you&#8217;re ever gonna be is mean<br \/>\nSomeday I&#8217;ll be big enough so you can&#8217;t hit me<br \/>\nAnd all you&#8217;re ever gonna be is mean<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And that&#8217;s what happened!<\/p>\n<p>If someone has no exposure to Catholic teaching, you have to expect they&#8217;ll be on birth control or misunderstand Church teaching on homosexuality, abortion, and other sensitive topics.<\/p>\n<p>You need to respect their positions, but you don&#8217;t want them to keep those positions.<\/p>\n<p>Meet\u00a0people where they are, but don&#8217;t let them stay there&#8211;take them where God wants them to be.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Observe<\/h2>\n<p>Taylor Swift speaks to\u00a0the\u00a0hearts of her listeners. She writes songs that resonate\u00a0with her audience. She says,\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;My goal is to never write songs that my fans can&#8217;t relate to&#8221;\u00a0(source:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taylor_Swift\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, quite a few young girls have the experience of bringing home a boy their parents hate. I&#8217;m sure Swift knows this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Evangelization happens at\u00a0the intersection of a person&#8217;s desires and God&#8217;s revelation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To do this, you have to observe people, get to know them, and\u00a0understand what makes them tick. What are they feeling? What are their hopes, dreams, and desires? What are they longing for?<\/p>\n<p>An evangelizing catechist knows how to take these questions and connect them to God&#8217;s answers.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Speak from your heart<\/h2>\n<p>Swift&#8217;s songs are very personal.\u00a0Swift once said, &#8220;I thought people might find them hard to relate to, but it turned out that the more personal my songs were, the more closely people could relate to them&#8221; (source:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taylor_Swift\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Evangelization depends on letting some of yourself shine through.<\/p>\n<p>Tell them how you feel\u00a0about God and why you care how they feel. Let them\u00a0understand your motivations for teaching about the Church.<\/p>\n<p>Connect\u00a0with\u00a0people on a human level and they&#8217;ll respond back to you.<\/p>\n<p>Too many catechists are just talking heads spouting off what the Catechism says. People don&#8217;t need that. They can read\u00a0the Catechism.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t make your teaching a list of facts. Give your students an interpretation of Church teaching in real life. Tell stories, give anecdotes from your life.
