\"\"<\/a>I\u2019m always a little uncomfortable at Palm Sunday Mass.<\/p>\n

No, it\u2019s not because the gospel is so long.<\/p>\n

But it is because of the gospel.<\/p>\n

You know how there’s all the different parts for the gospel reading on Palm Sunday?<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a narrator and the bystanders, the priest is Jesus, and then there\u2019s the part for the congregation.<\/p>\n

I hate saying, \u201cCrucify him!\u201d I don\u2019t much like the \u201cHail, King of the Jews\u201d part either.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m never quite sure–should I say it with conviction and really play the part? Or, is that bad. Maybe I should downplay the whole thing and say it sort of…monotone.<\/p>\n

In giving me that part, it seems like the Church is implying that somehow I had something to do with this. That makes me uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

I mean, I\u2019m innocent in this right? Right???
\n<\/p>\n

Palm\/Passion Sunday?<\/h2>\n

The other thing about Palm Sunday is it seems to have a bit of an identity crisis. Is it Palm Sunday or Passion Sunday?<\/p>\n

Are we happy about Jesus\u2019 triumphal entry into Jerusalem? Or, are we sad that he\u2019s put to death?<\/p>\n

The mashup of these two themes seems kind of contradictory.<\/p>\n

But this one I get.<\/p>\n

The long road from Sunday to Friday<\/h2>\n

On Sunday Jesus enters the city with shouts of joy.\u00a0Everyone is in the streets proclaiming him king!<\/p>\n

\u201cHosanna!\u201d they yell. That\u2019s the traditional greeting for a Davidic King returning triumphant from battle. In those days, a thousand years before Jesus, the people\u00a0would line the streets waving palm branches as the warrior king passed by\u00a0shouting, \u201cHosanna!\u201d or \u201cSavior!\u201d<\/p>\n

The chief priests and scribes knew exactly what the people were saying. They\u2019re proclaiming Jesus the new Davidic King, the Messiah! That\u2019s why they tell Jesus to make the people stop!<\/p>\n

But Jesus comes back saying there’s no stopping this. “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out,”\u00a0he replies.<\/p>\n

However, the same people that were shouting his praise on Sunday were shouting his condemnation on Friday. In the span of five days Jesus went from king to criminal.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s just crazy, right? You\u2019d never do that would you?<\/p>\n

Ah, but don\u2019t you?<\/p>\n

You are\u00a0the man!<\/h2>\n

How many times do we profess belief on Sunday and then betray that belief throughout the week? We\u2019re unkind, selfish, and resentful. We lie, gossip, judge, and manipulate.<\/p>\n

Maybe there\u2019s even bigger sins like the use of\u00a0contraceptives in your marriage.<\/p>\n

We are those people! Who killed Jesus? It was every one of us!<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unfortunately fitting that I wave my palm at the beginning of Mass and then shout, “Crucify him,” later when I read the gospel.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s my sin that put him on the cross. It\u2019s my betrayal of him in a thousand little ways that made it necessary for him be there.<\/p>\n

And, maybe it\u2019s good that I feel uncomfortable about it. Maybe it\u2019s good that I\u2019m reminded of my weakness, my lack of courage in the face of temptation, my fickle nature.<\/p>\n

Spirituality takeaway<\/h2>\n

So I challenge you to say those verses every year and let yourself be uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

If you don’t know your weakness, then let this gospel reading be the reminder to you. You are not alright. You’re broken inside, and you need what happened on that day.<\/p>\n

And yes, you’re partly to blame. Own it! Because if you don’t, then you also can’t receive the gift that comes from it.<\/p>\n

If we all recognized in humility our discomfort in the Palm\/Passion Sunday gospels and open ourselves to it, we’d all move light years forward in\u00a0understanding we’re not innocent, we’re not self-sufficient, and we’re not in control.<\/p>\n

We need the guilt in order to claim the prize–new life in the one who truly saves us from ourselves.<\/p>\n
