\"Salvation<\/a>Salvation history is the story of God and the story of man.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s how God has loved and cherished mankind since the beginning of time.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s how mankind has journeyed from Godly riches to rags and back again.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s how the hero-king, the rescuer Jesus Christ, came down from his throne to share his life and deliver mankind from captivity.<\/p>\n

Quite literally, salvation history is the story of how we are saved–our redemption in Jesus Christ.\u00a0But it\u2019s actually much more than that. It\u2019s the vehicle to understand who you are in this world\u00a0and what you\u2019re meant\u00a0to be.<\/p>\n

Salvation is real history<\/h2>\n

Salvation history comes primarily from the Bible.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Bible is a collection of stories that have different literary genres. These include\u00a0poetry, prophecy, wisdom\/proverbs, epistles (letters), and history.<\/p>\n

The historical books tell a story that unfolds over thousands of years. It can be hard to understand how it all fits together, but it does.<\/p>\n

This is a true account. The historical narrative of the Bible is not a fairy tale or made up. It really happened.<\/p>\n

God writes the world like men write books. He orchestrated events so that what happened, from the dawn of time, is like his own book.<\/p>\n

He writes in actual events the same way you or I would write in words. Therefore, history is really \u201cHis-Story,\u201d God\u2019s story.<\/p>\n

What is the story?<\/h2>\n

The story of salvation history begins with creation<\/strong>, Adam and Eve, and the story of the Fall.<\/p>\n

At the center is Christ. He the interpretive key because all of salvation history is grounded in Christ and the Cross. Everything before leads to him. Everything after emanates from him.<\/p>\n

But actually there’s a back story. Salvation history is much older than creation, and you can\u2019t understand it without one more essential piece–the Trinity.<\/p>\n

Before time and creation, God lived and loved in a union of Persons so perfect and wonderful, words can’t even describe it.<\/p>\n

God created us to live in this union with him. Hence,\u00a0everything God \u201cwrote\u201d in history is for that purpose–the union of mankind to himself.<\/p>\n

Why is salvation history important?<\/h2>\n

In a sense salvation history is past history, but it\u2019s also present.<\/p>\n

The story of salvation isn’t over. This plan of God envelops us, and we are\u00a0actively a part of it.<\/p>\n

Knowledge of God\u2019s saving plan is not just nice to know information.\u00a0Understanding God\u2019s actions in history, his dealings with mankind, reveal the inner truth of who God is. Conversely, understanding who God is sheds light on what he’s done in salvation history.<\/p>\n

Consequently, salvation history\u00a0forms the foundation of the whole supernatural work and mission of the Church. It directly influences our life and mission within the Church.<\/p>\n

Catechetical takeaway<\/h2>\n

The truths of salvation history are some of the highest truths we can know, and the most practical.\u00a0Catholic\u00a0spirituality and ministry depend on them.<\/p>\n

The history of salvation is, in itself, evangelizing. \u00a0It is the gospel, the good news of God’s saving actions.<\/p>\n

It is essential to\u00a0understand who we were in\u00a0the beginning and what we will be at the end of time because this sheds a clarifying light on the mystery of the human condition.<\/p>\n

Salvation history is the answer\u00a0to who we are as human persons. The answer to why we have these longings that we don’t\u00a0understand. The answer to how we can fill\u00a0the restlessness in our\u00a0hearts.<\/p>\n

Most noteworthy to you as a catechist, if you don\u2019t understand salvation history, you can\u2019t effectively convey who Jesus Christ is to your students and what he means for their lives.<\/p>\n
