Parenting teens is scary.<\/p>\n

I know\u2026I have two!<\/p>\n

It gets even scarier for those of us interested in\u00a0keeping our teens\u00a0Catholic.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve seen the apathetic look of most teens at Mass. You\u2019ve heard the alarming statistics that 80% of cradle Catholic leave the Church between ages 18-23. You probably have friends with older teens or young adult children who don\u2019t practice anymore.<\/p>\n

So what can parents do with teens to make sure they don\u2019t lose their faith?<\/p>\n

In my new book, Keep Your Kids Catholic: Sharing Your Faith and Making it Stick<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, I discuss effective strategies\u00a0for\u00a0becoming an active part of your children\u2019s faith formation.<\/p>\n

Here are five parenting strategies, drawn from the book, to\u00a0help\u00a0you nurture your teen\u2019s faith.<\/p>\n

1. Engage them in dialogue<\/h2>\n

The teenage years are\u00a0a critical time.<\/p>\n

Teens are beginning to exert their independence and form their identities.\u00a0They\u00a0want\u00a0to understand their place in the world and figure out what they believe.<\/p>\n

To nurture your teen\u2019s faith, you need to\u00a0be involved in this exploration.<\/p>\n

Before they believed what they were taught. Now they need the reasons why they should believe.\u00a0You need\u00a0to\u00a0transition from lectures to dialogue.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve seen parents panic when their teen questions the faith they grew up with. Questioning is not all bad. In my RCIA program I urged questions. I used to say, if they weren\u2019t questioning, they weren\u2019t listening. Questioning means they\u2019re taking the teaching to heart, wrestling with it, and trying to integrate it. That\u2019s very different from rejecting it, but may lead to\u00a0rejection if not handled well.<\/p>\n

Everyone has doubts at some point. Engage those doubts\u00a0in discussion. Why are they\u00a0doubting? What are they\u00a0feeling? What prompted them\u00a0to think this way? If you can enter into their doubt and understand what\u2019s going on inside their heads, then you can work with it.<\/p>\n

Now, by discussion I don\u2019t mean\u00a0\u201cdon\u2019t do this because it\u2019s wrong\u201d or \u201cthou shalt not because the Church says so.\u201d I mean honestly considering cultural and personal issues, then talking about what the Church says and how this\u00a0relates to their life.<\/p>\n

If you want your teens\u00a0to develop real faith, they\u00a0have to internalize it.\u00a0They\u00a0have to own their faith and make it a part of them. The only way to get there is through dialogue.<\/p>\n

2. Be transparent<\/h2>\n

Transparency goes along with dialogue.<\/p>\n

As your kids get older, you must treat them more like adults.<\/p>\n

Openness, honesty, and transparency about who you are and what you believe goes\u00a0a long way toward establishing trust with your teen. Trust is\u00a0a huge factor in handing on faith.\u00a0Without it, they\u2019ll doubt your motivation\u00a0and wonder what\u2019s in it for them.<\/p>\n

Transparency literally means letting someone see right through you, letting them know who you are and what\u2019s going on inside. Openness about your life experience builds a kind of authority\u2026a \u201cbeen there\u201d street cred.<\/p>\n

Sharing your journey, your struggles, and how Catholicism changed you will motivate change in your teen.\u00a0If they see it in your face, they\u2019ll know it\u2019s real.<\/p>\n

3. Develop their spiritual\u00a0muscles<\/h2>\n

Faith-filled teens practice\u00a0devotions like\u00a0Bible reading and prayer. Devotions are\u00a0like spiritual training. They\u00a0strengthen spiritual muscles and\u00a0make teens\u00a0more receptive to God\u2019s will.<\/p>\n

If you did devotions with your teen\u00a0when they were younger, give them more responsibility now. Set a goal\u00a0for them to\u00a0accomplish\u00a0on their own.\u00a0If your haven\u2019t done devotions with your teens before, start small. Do\u00a0it\u00a0with them at first as a special bonding time. Then set micro goals.<\/p>\n

The best way to do something big is to start small. Adopt tiny habits that don\u2019t require serious effort. By doing a little every day, you gradually and incrementally improve.<\/p>\n

For instance, have them read the Bible five minutes every night before bed. It doesn\u2019t sound like much, but five minutes every day adds up.<\/p>\n

Try going to adoration for 10 minutes after Mass each week. During Advent and Lent, set goals like being kind to one person a\u00a0day or being generous when asked to help.<\/p>\n

These small efforts will pay big dividends over time to nurture your teen\u2019s faith.<\/p>\n

4. Get them involved<\/h2>\n

The teen years are a great time to get kids involved with service and\/or helping in ministry.<\/p>\n

Ministry and service makes faith bigger. That\u2019s just the way it is.\u00a0And, often teens\u00a0who shy away from religious activities will get into service. It\u2019s more concrete and less \u201cchurch-y.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m convinced\u00a0that no one reaches\u00a0their full faith potential unless they\u2019re involved in some kind of ministry or service. You have to give back in some\u00a0way. God loves us, and we return that love through service to others. As his love moves through us, some of it sticks.<\/p>\n

Often teens make time for church activities by combining their social and religious lives. They weave together school, friendships, social time, volunteer work, and worship into a tightly-knit package.<\/p>\n

5. Make sure they have Catholic friends<\/h2>\n

That brings me to the last strategy\u2013friends.<\/p>\n

Acceptance is a driving factor in kid\u2019s\u00a0lives, especially teens. A lot of times\u00a0friends aren\u2019t chosen; kids just fall into a group that accepts them. That can be dangerous if that\u00a0group is traveling the wrong path.<\/p>\n

Middle school and high school youth programs are a must. Your teens\u00a0need relationships with other Catholic kids who share the same values and make the same choices.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not saying you should\u00a0make them go to youth group, but I am\u2026sort of.<\/p>\n

Faith-parenting takeaway<\/h2>\n

This is the time to solidify your teen\u2019s Catholic worldview.<\/p>\n

The important thing is to be involved! Some find this time\u00a0scary, but it\u2019s actually more fun. You can engage them on a more adult level and start discussing real issues, concerns, and Church teachings.<\/p>\n

Remember, you are your teen\u2019s biggest influencer, whether it feels that way or not.<\/p>\n

Use these five strategies\u00a0to nurture your teen\u2019s faith and\u00a0help them stay Catholic.<\/p>\n
